We are Team Resistance, a participant in the international tournament known as the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition team. F.I.R.S.T. stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” Each year in January, a strategy game is released and it’s our job to make a robot to compete with. We design and build it to score as many points as possible, and students are actively involved every step of the way.
As Team #86, we are proud to be one of the oldest FRC teams in the nation and have been competing since 1996. Our team is made up of roughly 60 students who come from high schools all over Jacksonville as well as several mentors who volunteer their free time to provide guidance to the students.
As students, we learn engineering-specific skills like safety procedures in a machine shop, programming, and familiarizing ourselves with the design process; knowing that the teamwork, leadership skills, and gracious professionalism that we acquire will give us an edge in any profession. We graduate from Team Resistance ready for whatever might come next and with experiences that we couldn’t have cultivated anywhere else.
Outside of build season, we give back to the community. This summer our students organized and ran two free summer camps to spread their love and knowledge of robotics to elementary and middle schoolers. Through robotics and hands on applications the students learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.). We are often at other S.T.E.M. events such as the Jacksonville Public Library’s Comic Con and MOSH’s Mini Maker Faire.
Since this program is volunteer-based and free for students to join, community support is important. We’d like to share with you the benefits of becoming an Ultimate Sponsor (see enclosed sponsor pledge form for all sponsor level opportunities). Volunteering to help run games and events is another way to support FIRST Robotics Challenge and Team Resistance.
